Budget-Friendly Travel Hacks for Students
Top tips to travel often as a student whilst not breaking the bank.
As a student, travelling on a budget is all about smart planning, flexibility, and knowing where to find savings. If you want to explore the world without draining your bank account, here are my top 7 travel hacks every student should know.
1. Travel During Off-Peak Seasons
One of the perks of student life is having a flexible schedule to travel during off-peak times. Flights and accommodation tend to be cheaper outside of school holiday seasons. With long summer breaks, you can avoid the July-August price spikes which can save you hundreds! The weather in June and September is just as good and the locations are less busy!
2. Book Early and Be Flexible
Another key hack to saving money is booking flights and accommodations in advance. Prices typically rise as the travel date gets closer, so early planning is crucial. My tip: check your uni timetable at the start of each year and book your holidays in asap! Websites like Skyscanner, Google Flights, and Booking.com or holiday packages like Jet2 or Tui offer great cheap deals for those who plan ahead. Consider overnight flights or trips with layovers—though they may take longer, they can save you a significant amount. I would recommend trying to be flexible so you can look at holidays available for the whole month so you can get the cheapest holiday. Even being flexible for +/- 3 days can drastically change the prices.
3. Stay in Budget-Friendly Accommodation
When travelling on a budget, accommodation is one of the key areas to save on, being the bulk of a holiday’s cost. Hostels, budget hotels, and Airbnb are great options for students. You are there to explore, not to spend all your time in the room! Sacrificing a bit of luxury for affordability means you’ll have more money for experiences, excursions, and souvenirs.
4. Pack Light to Avoid Extra Fees
Another easy way to save money is by packing light to avoid extra luggage fees. Many airlines charge hefty fees for carry-ons or checked luggage. Opt for an under-the-seat bag to avoid these costs. I would recommend buying an under-the-seat bag from Primark or Amazon to ensure you fit the limit. Packing cubes can help you organise efficiently and make the most of your space.
5. Use Public Transport
Once you’ve arrived at your destination, avoid pricey Ubers and consider opting for public transportation. Not only is it cheaper, but it is a great way to tour the local area. A metro or bus ticket can cost as little as 1.40 Euros. Google Maps can help you navigate local transport routes with ease. For airport transfers, trains and buses are more affordable options than taxis or parking.
6. Use an International Bank Card
If your bank charges for overseas transactions, consider getting an international bank card like Revolut or Monzo. These free cards don’t charge fees for foreign transactions, allowing you to avoid the currency exchange and travel safely by refraining from carrying large amounts of cash around. Most places will accept them and it’s a far easier and safer option!
7. Take Advantage of Student Discounts
Don’t forget to take advantage of student discounts! Many cultural attractions—such as museums, historical sites, and ruins—offer discounted admission for students or young travellers under 25. Always ask if a discount is available, even if it’s not advertised. On a recent trip to Athens, I saved a lot of money at various museums and ruins, getting half-priced tickets, by being under 25.
Travelling as a student doesn’t have to break the bank. By opting for experiences over luxury and making use of these hacks, you can see the world without burning through your student loan. After all, it’s the incredible memories you’ll cherish—not the five-star hotels or midday flights!
Happy travels!
