Head over heels for autumn
If the idea of leaving behind your summer wardrobe to transition towards autumn hues leaves you
with a cold, melancholy feeling, then this fall’s must haves will hopefully leave you with a change of
heart that autumn is indeed, the most stylish season.
With fashion designers and their respective autumn/winter collections as well as viral tiktok trends, it
is fair to say we’re simply spoilt for choice when it comes to what is fashionable this season.
RED RED RED
Although this year’s Autumn/ Winter 2023 runways demonstrated a wide variety of looks to love or
loathe, the colour red took central stage. Rickie De Sole (Nordstrom’s women’s fashion director)
illuminates this by saying, “from a bright pepper, to rich, deep bordeaux, there’s a red for every style
and occasion’. Whilst the boldest amongst us will happily sport a full red ensemble, if you prefer a
more understated, softened look, then Rickie De Sole instead advises to ‘lean into accessories”. This
can be executed through red accessories like bags and shoes, seen through the viral MANGO cherry
red heels, or even as little as red earrings or nails for a small pop of colour.
CAPSULE WARDROBE and MINIMALISM
Another theme which demands attention this season is the concept of a capsule wardrobe, which has
skyrocketed in popularity on TikTok, where the associated hashtag boasts 1.6 billion views. The idea
behind the concept is to promote sustainability and it consists of fewer, higher quality items in your
wardrobe that can be mixed and matched and accessorized easily. Think basic, long sleeved t-shirts
and cosy jumpers to keep you warm, especially considering Leeds isn’t exactly known for its tropical
weather. For more affordable capsule wardrobe items your student loan will stretch to, turn to ASOS
basics and H&M for their vast, eclectic collection of chunky knits and basic tees.
UGG BOOTS/ DUPES
It certainly wouldn’t be a fall must haves article without mentioning the UGG boot extravaganza
which has dominated the TikTok for you page throughout early autumn. With the release and
continuous sell out of UGG’s ‘classic ultra mini’ design, this snuggly boot is arguably the ultimate fall
must have this season and guaranteed to keep your feet warm as we venture into the colder months.
For affordable alternatives, BOOHOO and AMAZON both have some notably similar, but much more
budget friendly dupes.
BIKER STYLE LEATHER JACKETS AND TRENCH COATS
A key staple in any autumnal wardrobe is fashionable outerwear and it seems there are two specific
styles to pay particular attention to this season. The first is a classic, oversized trench coat. This is
ideal for a more professional look, but can also be layered on top of a more basic outfit like a tracksuit
to elevate the look, whilst still maintaining the principle that comfort is indeed key. This can be
accessorized with a claw clip/ chunky knit scarf for the ultimate easy but stylish outfit.
Additionally, a biker style leather jacket is a definite fall must have this season. Whilst last year saw
the trend of leather blazers, once It Girl Molly Mae wore her ZARA biker style leather jacket, this
seized the spotlight and set the trend. These oversized leather jackets can be worn casually with jeans
for an everyday look, or paired with a dressier outfit for a night out to the pub or a bar, as it is sure to
keep you warm, yet stylish at the same time. Furthermore, don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour. A
popular choice this autumn seems to be khaki, however the black version is arguably easier to pair
with more outfits.
